Positive Impact Of Higher Education On Education - 979 Words

Individual There are many individuals now studying at higher education institutions, such as university, and benefitting both financially and health-wise. The increased wage and job opportunities afforded to university and college graduates are one of the positive impacts that higher education provides individuals. A report by Baum, Ma Payea (2013) finds that on average those who complete a college degree earn on average 14% more than those who have completed study at a high school level. It is also reported that unemployment rates are 1.6 to 7.1% lower in those who study at a college level or higher in comparison to those who only have high school level education. With higher wages and better access to job opportunities, the standard of living for individuals with higher education is improved and with this comes benefits such as more money to invest in not only their own individual interests, but also into local communities. In comparison, however, the study by Stokes Wright (2011) suggests that the cost of higher education in Australia does not support students decisions to study, saying that the cost of fees are often higher than the benefits they are likely to receive from studying at university. The study by Baum, Ma Payea (2013) also reported that those individuals who completed college education benefitted health-wise. Hamlet’s Soliloquys Free Essays

Throughout the play Hamlet there are soliloquys, these soliloquys enable the audience/reader to be able to know what the characters truly think and how they truly feel. Although many characters have their own soliloquys, Hamlet’s are the most informative and advance the plot the greatest. When Hamlet thinks of his mother marrying his despised uncle, Hamlet is disgusted at how soon they were married after his father’s death. Hamlets first soliloquy creates a dark atmosphere because he longs for death and condemns his mother’s marriage to his father’s brother. By truthfully revealing his innermost thoughts and emotions, Hamlet’s soliloquy advances the plot by showing the audience and reader how Hamlet feels about the current situation, his father’s death, his own life and mortality, and his mother’s marriage to Claudius. Hamlet’s second soliloquy follows the visit from the late King Hamlet’s ghost. Once the ghost leaves, Hamlet seems fully determined on revenge in contrast to the underlying theme of meditation and love while Hamlet was with the ghost. Once the ghost is gone, Hamlet has no thoughts of whether or not the Ghost is good or evil. Hamlet vows to remember the Ghost and its command to revenge. He makes it clear his feelings toward his mother â€Å"O most pernicious women! † (Shakespeare 32), and to his uncle â€Å"O villain, villain, smiling damned villain! † (Shakespeare 32). This soliloquy’s main focus is on Hamlet’s revenge of his father’s death. Looking at this soliloquy it looks like Hamlet will be swift in his revenge, but his road to revenge will be full of procrastination and over thinking. This soliloquy advances the plot by showing what will be the focus throughout the rest of the play. In Hamlet’s third soliloquy he contemplates how the first player can weep for Hecuba, a fictional character, when in reality Hecuba means nothing to the first player and Hecuba cares nothing for him. Hamlet thinks of what the Player would do if he had the motive that Hamlet has. This thought provokes Hamlet to scold himself for apparent cowardice and lack of action when he has real reasons to take them. From this he curses Claudius â€Å"Bloody, bawdy villain! Remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindless villain! † (Shakespeare 62). Hamlet listens to himself and mocks his emotional outburst â€Å"Why, what an ass am I! † (Shakespeare 62). Hamlet realizes that he must act in some way and sets his brain to work and thinks of something to do â€Å"About, my brains. Hum† (Shakespeare 62). He begins to shape a plan to test the Ghost’s story. Hamlet starts to question whether the Ghost is a good or evil spirit â€Å"The spirit that I have seen May be a devil, and the devil hath power† (Shakespeare 62). Hamlet’s plan becomes clear, the players will perform a play showing a murder similar to the way that Claudius murdered the King Hamlet, if when watching this murder Claudius reveals his guilt; it will prove that the Ghost has spoken truly â€Å"The play’s the thing Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the king. † (Shakespeare 63). This soliloquy creates a conniving atmosphere as Hamlet plans to make Claudius reveal his guilt of murdering his brother, King Hamlet. This advances the plot by showing that Hamlet is capable of taking some action and shows the audience Hamlet’s plan to make Claudius show his emotions. This fourth soliloquy starts out with possibly the most popular Shakespeare quote in the world â€Å"To be, or not to be, that is the question:† (Shakespeare 66). By this Hamlet could be talking about his own personal dilemma, whether he should live, or commit suicide. Hamlet could also not be considering his own situation, but is asking a more general question: is life worth living? This questions the advantages and disadvantages of human existence, whether it is better to be unhappy, than to be at all. This soliloquy creates a dark atmosphere because of Hamlet’s questioning of suicide and if life in general is worth living. This soliloquy shows that Hamlet is still questioning life as he did earlier in the play in his first soliloquy. Just before Hamlet’s fifth soliloquy, Hamlet argues with Polonius and refuses to be treated like a musical instrument that can be made to say anything at someone else’s wish. In the soliloquy Hamlet uses the melodramatic stock imagery of a traditional Elizabethan revenger, â€Å"Now could I drink hot blood,† (Shakespeare 88). As Hamlet leaves to meet Gertrude, he vows to scold her, but not harm her, â€Å"I will speak daggers to her, but use none. † (Shakespeare 88). In Hamlet’s sixth soliloquy, he enters into the church where he finds Claudius praying. Hamlet draws his sword to kill Claudius but then holds back because he is praying. If Hamlet were to kill him while he was praying then Claudius’s soul would be sent to heaven. Hamlet then reflects on the fact that his father was killed at a moment when he was unprepared for heaven thus condemning him to suffering after death. Hamlet then decides to kill Claudius at a more sinful moment, and thus damn him to hell. Once again Hamlet has found an excuse to postpone killing Claudius. There is dramatic irony in Claudius’s final couplet. It reveals that Hamlet may have caught the conscience of the king, but that he was deceived by appearance. Claudius only looked as if he was praying, his efforts to contact god were unsuccessful: â€Å"My words fly up, my thoughts remain below. Words without thoughts never to heaven go. † (Shakespeare 91). This soliloquy creates a dark atmosphere even though it is in a church because Hamlet wants to make sure that he not only kills Claudius but that he suffers eternally. This soliloquy shows that Hamlet is not a hard-hearted traditional revenger and continually finds reasons to delay killing Claudius. Before Hamlet’s seventh and final soliloquy, Hamlet speaks with a captain in the Norwegian army. The captain tells Hamlet that the army is passing through Denmark on its way to fight for a tiny unprofitable part of Poland. Hamlet reflects on the sickness of an apparently healthy society â€Å"This is th’impostume of much wealth and peace. † (Shakespeare 110) in which thousands will die in battle over such a â€Å"straw† (Shakespeare 110). These thoughts prompt Hamlet’s last soliloquy in which he once again reproaches himself for delaying the revenge of his father’s murder. Hamlet then considers that everything he encounters prompts him to take revenge: â€Å"How all occasions do inform against me, And spur my dull revenge. † (Shakespeare 110). He reflects that god has given him human intelligence to use and that capacity for making moral decision making is what separates humans from animals: â€Å"Sith I have cause, and will, and strength, and means To do’t† (Shakespeare 110). The encounter with Fortinbras’ army spurs Hamlet to speed his revenge: â€Å"Oh from this time forth, My thoughts be bloody or be nothing worth. (Shakespeare 111). This helps us understand the working place for this construction company. The working environment was unsafe for the workers. Workers had no protective clothing when at work (Tylor, 2015). At some point, this company had a case where a painter fell down and died due to injuries to the head. This is an avoidable instance in that a helmet would be of help. With this condition of the workplace, it is very unsafe for any worker and any employment happening is against the set rules and standards (Knaus, 2012). The conditions, highlighted in the above discussions, show the hazards that were predisposing factors to harm. The risk factors contributing to the breach were avoidable, but preventive measures were not in place before the occurrence of the safety breach. The hazard that we find in the article is the low-slung power line, which was exposed. This hazard is avoidable when effective preventive measures are in place. There are many preventive measures which when applied, could lead to the avoidance of safety breach. Some of these measures are engineering control measures, substitution and isolation control measures (Gharaie, Lingard Cooke, 2017). Power lines are very dangerous on any construction site, and so precautions have to be in place before the damage occurs. There are several precautions, which when considered could have saved the life of the driver and the future of the company too. First, before the establishment of a construction site at that place, safety and risk manager could probably have pointed out the risk (Hegeman, 2013). This means that no risk manager was involved in choosing the construction site as the present risk manager within site had no qualifications. When deciding on a workplace site, companies should involve risk managers to identify any risk available and analyze the danger of the risk, before establishing a site or abolishing the site.Electrocution of the driver was an avoidable condition; it is only that the company did not put in place the preventive measures. Secondly, the company could install different signs at the power line; this will send a message to workers of the available danger. Whenever any point in a site is hazardous, indicating by use of different methods will help prevent any safety breach from occurring. In this incident, the company could install flagged warning lines to mark both the horizontal and the vertical power lines and thus helping workers to understand where there is a danger. With flagged power lines, every worker or a visitor within site will know of the availability of the hazard at that point. Many companies employ this measure in preventing electrocution or other minor injuries caused by electricity. It is a preventive measure, which keeps everyone alert of the danger (Kim, Lewko, and Garritano, 2016). Training workers is also a method that could prevent the breach from happening. Training is an important aspect that helps to prevent workers from hazards and risk which they could easily avoid (Demirkesen Arditi, 2015). Workers should undergo various training to understand the different types of hazards; they should be enlightened on hazard identification and hazard avoidance (Demirkesen Arditi, 2015). If the company had all these preventive measures in place, the safety breach would not occur. The security breach was an avoidable scenario, and it occurred out of ignorance and negligence. At the point of delivering material, there were power lines which were lying low. This was a hazard dangerous enough to cause death but wasn't addressed. The truck of the driver hit the power lines, and finally, the driver succumbed to electrocution. This incident was one that could be easily avoided by the company, but the company did not put any measures in place. The company was very irresponsible that they did not remorse the death of the driver, the company also tried to hinder investigations of the drivers death. A security officer at the company tried to alter the attendance records of the driver; this was to clear evidence (Tylor 2015). All this indicate how irresponsible the company was to his employees. The incident occurred due to the state of which the company was regarding risk management provision. The company did not consider the life of a worker as important. It valued the services provided by the workers most and not workers safety. This describes why the company was not able to employ the preventive measures to help avoid such an incidence. Many construction companies have different incidences of accidents at sites, but they do not address, as they take the incidence to be minor. Resolution by Safe Work Safe Work a governmental agency, whose main responsibility is to improve work health, safety and workers compensation, is important when an incident occurs. It fights for the rights of the workers against their ruthless employers (Takala et al., 2014). Safe work is responsible for fighting for any employee when there are incidences occurring at the workplace (Takala et al., 2014). In this construction site, where an employee has died due to hazards, there are several ways that safe work used to resolve the problem. In this incidence, Safe Work Australia employed some of their practice codes for construction sites to help reach resolutions. Among the codesused, we have to monitor, collecting, analyzing and reporting of the incidence as the first implemented policy (McInnes et al., 2016). From the article, several investigations were taking place within site, this made the company to get ways of walloping the required information. An officer in the company was directed to alter the drivers duty records in order to cover up the evidence. The incident was then reported to the necessary authorities. We see the company ending up in court. This is one of the methods that the safe work used in resolving the incident. Secondly, the incident was solved with workers compensation code which states that any work within a construction site or workplace, when encounters accidents while on the site, receives compensation from the company (Battaglia, Frey Passetti, 2014). The incident in the article, led to the death of the driver and so the company was required to compensate. Although the compensation fee could not exactly replace the drivers presence in his family, it helped in making the family understand justice can prevail.The company had to pay a compensation fee of 1.1 million dollars to the family of the diseased. Arrangements to abolish the construction site took place after the court trial. After a trial, the company was ordered to undergo liquidation, meaning there will be no re-establishment of the company. The company was found with many allegations, which could have been avoided. Since the company was ignorant and could not give value to their workers, the company had to undergo liquidation. The compensation fee imposed to this incident was huge that could lead to the companys bankruptcy (Battaglia, Frey Passetti, 2014). The method used by safe work to handle the problem in the incident was good. There were investigations that took place, the company ended up in court for trials and finally, a judgment was out which did not favor the company. The company had to pay a fine of 1.1 million dollars due to negligence. This is great way employed in dealing with the construction companies, although few aspects have to be emphasized on, for effectiveness in an incident that could happen in future. First, the compensation fee or the fine given to the company could be made slightly high, maybe 1.5- 1-8 million dollars, this would be a huge amount of money that will make other contractors careful with safety measures. Having proposed thisdoes not mean the fine was little but increasing that punishment would send a great communication to the rest of the constructors as they will work to ensure workers' safety and target not to get the penalty. Workers at the construction site should undergo training to help them understand the different types of hazards (Sacks, Perlman Barak, 2013). The Safe Care team should always enlighten workers on the need to having a voice at a workplace. Whenever an incident occurs on a construction site, they should give training to the workers who by any chance did not undergo the safety training. Workers should also undergo training to identify the different hazards and how this hazards can be avoided and reported. When safe care embarks in doing this, most of the workers will be enlightened, and the country will have reduced cases of accidents at the construction site (Sacks, Perlman Barak, 2013). Every company, either small or big, should have safety rules that govern it. A company running without the safety rules, is at risk of causing injuries to workers (Ozmec et al., 2015). The safety rules will define to workers on the procedure to follow in case they identify a hazard. Safe Care should employ different mechanisms in which they are able to identify companies with no safety rules (Ozmec eta l., 2015). Prevention should be Safe Cares priority and not handling the matter after the incident. The following are some of my suggestion on how I would have addressed the problem the in the company if I were among the workers. Identifying the hazard and taking the appropriate measures could be my priority. Workers in any company have other roles to play, they are not limited to performing the duties allocated to them but should be concerned with their health and safety (Perlman, Sacks Barak, 2014). Communicating to the management would have been my first step when no actions are taken in, would move to the external forces like Safe care. Companys ignorance and negligence on the hazard that was visible enough on the site led to the death of the driver. This is enough to stop the company from proceeding further with their construction. Conclusion The Australian Government through Workplace Health and Safety agency has set rules on how construction companies or any other working place should prioritize safety and risk management. This will help in minimizing the damages caused by hazards. Many people get injured, some become disabled, and others die every year due to overlooking risk management. The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson With the assassination of Lincoln, the presidency fell upon an old-fashioned southerner named Andrew Johnson. Although an honest and honorable man, Andrew Johnson was one of the most unfortunate Presidents. Over time there has been a controversial debate as to whether Johnson deserved to be impeached, or if it was an unconstitutional attempt by Congress to infringe upon the presidents authority. The impeachment of Andrew Johnson was politically motivated. The spirit of the Jacksonian democracy inspired Andrew Johnson. From this influence he helped found the Democratic Party in his region and became elected to the town council in 1829. After serving in his town council for two years he was elected mayor in 1831. Johnson was a strict constructionist and an advocate of states' rights who distrusted the power of government at all levels. Following his term as Mayor Johnson won elections to the Tennessee State legislature in 1835, 1839, and 1841. After serving these terms he was elected to Congress in 1843. As a member of the US House, Johnson opposed government involvement in the nations economy through tariffs and internal improvements. In 1852 Johnson lost his seat in the US House because of gerrymandering by the Whig- dominated state legislature. (Jackson) Following his loss he came back in 1853 to win a narrow victory for governor and served two terms. In 1857, Johnson was then elected to represent Tennessee in the US Senate. While se rving in the Senate Johnson became an advocate of the Homestead Bill, which was opposed by most Southern Democrats and their slave owning, plantation constituents. (Kennedy) This issue strained the already tense relations between Johnson and the wealthy planters in western Tennessee. Eventually the party split into regional factions. Johnson made the decision to back the Southern Democratic nominee, John Breckinridge. By this time the rupture between Johnson and most Southern Democrats was too deep to heal. The break became final when Johnson allied himself with pro-union Whigs to fight the Secessionist Democrats in his state for several months. When the Civil War began, Johnson was the only Senator from a Confederate state that did not leave Congress to return to the South. During the war, Johnson made the decision to join the Republicans in the National Union Party. In 1864, Johnson's big break came. Lincoln selected him as vice presidential running mate on the National running mate. When it came time for Johnson to deliver his inaugural address he delivered it while inebriated, lending credence to the rumors that he was an alcoholic. (Kennedy) Even with these rumors floating around it didn't stop the victory of Lincoln and Johnson in the 1864 election. Within six weeks of taking office as Vice President, Johnson succeeded to the Presidency after Lincoln's assassination. Johnson wasn't prepared for this position and faced many difficult decisions. Johnson's first difficult situation was developing a policy for the postwar reconstruction of the union. Johnson's Reconstruction Plan allowed the former confederate states to return quickly to the Union. This plan would have left the civil rights of former slaves completely under the auspices of former-slave owners (Kennedy). Johnson believed secession was illegal. He felt that the Southern states were still in the union and only had to set up loyal governments to resume legitimate relations with the United States. (Trefousse) Congress didn't share the same views as the president though, they felt that the freedmen should be protected and the power of the Republican Party should be sustained in the South. Since the President could not guarantee black civil and political rights it caused opponents to pass the fourteenth Amendment in hope of securing them. His continued intransigence led to the framing of the Reconstruction Acts, remanding the Southern states to military rule until they enfranchised the blacks and ratified the amendment. (Trefousse) Radical Republicans in Congress wrestled control of Reconstruction from the President and began passing their own program over Johnson's vetoes. The result was the passage of the Tenure of Office Act. This act prevented the President form dismissing officials ap pointed by him and with the advice and consent of the Senate without the body's approval. The users of this term agree that any definition of â€Å"social capital† should include some if not all of the following aspects: connection between individuals; clear distinction between economical and social capital; presence of contradictory and different social processes; involvement of reciprocity and trust principles; non- monetary forms of power and influence; and focus on positive aspects of social life (Portes, 1998, p. 8-9). So, how is â€Å"social capital† defined? According to the World Bank (1999), social capital encompasses norms, institutions, and relationships that shape the quantity and quality of interactions within the society. It implies that social capital is not simply the sum of institutions, norms and interactions that underpin the society, but rather they act as glue that holds the society together. Also, social capital is defined as the connections among individuals, norms of trustworthiness and reciprocity and social networks that arise from connections among individuals (Putnam 2000, p. 19). From this definition, it can be deduced that social capital requires that civic virtue be embedded in the reciprocal social relations. This is because a society needs connected and virtuous individuals for it to be considered rich in social capital. (Bourdieu 1983, p. 249) defines social capital as the aggregate of the potential or actual resources, which are connected to possession of a long-lasting network of institutionalized relationships of mutual recognition and acquaintance. From the above definitions, it is evidently clear that the term â€Å"social capital† cannot be defined entirely in a single definition that can cover all the aspects. Tao Of Pooh And Application Life And Therapy Philosophy Essay This paper discusses how the book the Tao Of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff relates the concept of Taoism to the characters from the Winnie The Pooh by A A Milne and their application to life and therapy. In The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff utilizes characters from Winnie the Pooh to attempt to explain the fundamentals of Taoism. By observing Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Tigger, and Pooh, it is easy to see that the actions of the character Pooh best describe Taoism. One of the most important principles of Taoism used in the book is the uncarved block. Hoff uses the characters from A A Milnes Winnie the Pooh books to illustrate and explain the basics of Taoist philosophy, showing how Pooh himself is the epitome of the Taoist thinker, enjoying life with simplicity but not stupidity. The author explains that Taoists try to appreciate, learn from, and work with whatever happens in life, whereas, in contrast, Confucianism attempts to impose order, and Buddhists see lifes tribulations as obstacles to be overcome before achieving Nirvana. He describes how Tao is the Way, which can be understood but not defined, and illustrates key elements of Tao such as Pu, the uncarved block, and Wu wei, goi ng with the flow. In case you should think that this book is altogether too simplistic, I should add that Hoff touches on the writings of Lao-Tzu (author of the Tao Te Ching), Chuang-tse, the poet Li Po, and other Taoist philosophers, giving his own interpretations of the passages. Hoff shows how Pooh best explains the Uncarved Block. The principle of the Uncarved Block is that things that are simple contain their own natural power, power that can be spoiled and lost when overcomplicated. Using the characters he shows how our lives can be sabotaged by errors in thinking and how it can be prevented. Hoff uses Rabbit to show when you are racing through life you can miss out on the valuable things that make up life itself. We seem to jeopardize ourselves by thinking too much of the self. Owl is used to show that when trying to find underlying meaning for everything you overcomplicate it. Hoff uses Piglet in the sense that Piglet is always scared and as a result scared to try things, if Piglet wouldnt dwell in worry, he would accomplish more, and find happiness .Sometimes staying less in your head is an advantage. Hoff goes on to show that the character of Eeyore is always depressed and dwells in negativity. If he abstained from this life would be completely different. Now finally we come to Pooh. The author exemplifies how Pooh doesnt stay in worry, nor is he over-analytical, he stays in the spontaneous. As a result of staying in the way he finds everything goes its own course and works out as a result of his non-action. Pooh goes with the flow of nature and doesnt interfere. He leads a life of simplicity and one free of worry. This is a perfect reflection of someone who follows the Tao. I think this is more or less a basic explanation of Tao and how to apply it to our lives by modeling out behavior in a likewise manner. There arent any obscure references here only face value application. The use of the cartoon characters that we all are familiar with is a very u seful strategy. It is a way of explanation that transcends all racial, sexual, gender barriers. For example, we wont try too hard or explain too much, because that would only Confuse things, and because it would leave the impression that it was all only an intellectual idea that could be left on the intellectual level and ignored. (p. 10) He uses each chapter of the book to teach a new principle of the Uncarved Block of Taoism. In each chapter he tells a Winnie the Pooh story and then explains how it relates to Taoism. Hoff writes a chapter teaching how cleverness does not always help, but it sometimes destroys things and is the reason that things do not work out. Hoff teaches that the Taoist believe that if you understand Inner Nature it is far more effective than knowledge or cleverness. He uses a poem called Cottleston Pie. The poem explains how things just are as they are and how people try to violate these principles with their everyday lives. There is also the story of Tigger and Roo. Tigger tries to be what he is not and as a result everything goes wrong and he always ends up getting stuck in a tree. Hoff also explains that working with Nature is best in the sense that you do not screw things up with a story about Eeyore getting stuck in the river. Everybody had been trying to think of clever ways to get Eeyore out of the river when Pooh said that if they just dropped a big stone into it, then it would just wash Eeyore ashore. He did it without even thinking, because thinking would complicate things, and of course it worked. Pooh worked with Nature and things worked out for him. As you can see, Hoff uses many different Winnie the Pooh stories to teach the uncomplicated ways of the Taoist. The only argument that Hoff really presents is whether or not the Taoist way is the best way and whether or not it really works. When you look at it from the point of Pooh and the stories he is a part of, you are able to see how easily the Taoist ideology fits snuggly into Pooh and his world. Obviously if you do not believe that cleverness and knowledge are not important, then you will not agree with anything Hoff is saying, but he makes you believe in showing you how it always works out with Pooh. He argues whether or not cleverness and knowledge really are important. For example, it can be explained in the story when Eeyore gets stuck in the river. Clever ways do not work, but Poohs simple way always seem to work surprisingly well. Hoff also argues how the Taoist believes that over exhausting ourselves needlessly only works against us. He uses Rabbit to explain this. Quite simply, Rabbit is always in a hurry, he is the very face of stress itself. Hoff explains these so called creatures like a shadow. Shadows are always rushing along. They are also always trying to lose their shadows. They try to run from them not realizing that they cannot, that they are one and the same. Hoff argues that by just sitting down and enjoying a nice sunny day, like Pooh would do, you can complicate things. You do not get the full fulfillment of your life. There is the argument that this is just using examples to match the conclusions that we have already come to. I believe however, that one cannot free himself of the weight of our foolish ways until we have exposed that fallacy and this is a vehicle to do that without feeling condescended by an authority figure that many associate with other comparative theories. Case and point Hoffs adaption of Winnie the Pooh to Taoist philosophy is brilliant and yet never strays from its humility. Through this I can now see how the field of psychology, is a chaotic discipline much more suited to the Taoist approach of going with the flow-the Wu wei, then against it. In Hoffs description of A A Milnes characters I was able to see myself trying to be like the Owl, while actually being a combination of the Rabbit and the pessimistic Eeyor e. Hoff has shown me how the ideal is to be a simple character such as Pooh himself, accepting life, work, and other people as they are rather than trying to impose order on them. I now seek to accept and move with events as they occur, preferring not to try to impose change nor viewing changes it as an obstacle to be overcome. It all comes down to acceptance and will. When you yield to the flow you find that it goes along with the grain of your life instead of against it. This approach spills over into every aspect of life, keeping them simple, letting nature direct the flow as it were.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a prevalent in today’s classrooms. There are many co-existing communication difficulties associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this paper I will discuss the nature of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, its common communication characteristics, and the implications of these characteristics socially, emotionally and academically as well as communication strategies that teachers may use to ensure that students with this disorder may be included in a regular class setting. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is also known by its abbreviated name ADHD. The American Family Physician (2001) states that â€Å"at least 9% of school aged children have ADHD†. ADHD is described as â€Å"a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by varying degrees of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity† (American Family Physician, 2001). Characteristics of ADHD can be divided into three categories, impulsiveness, inattention and hyperactivity and can include the following: †¢ Excessive talking †¢ Blurting †¢ Interrupting †¢ Not following directions †¢ Off task behavior †¢ Poor Self-Regulation †¢ Distractability †¢ Poor follow through on tasks (Okmi & Kaiser, 2000) It is important to note that some visual and hearing problems may also cause these behaviors. Medical doctors must diagnose ADHD and will rule out these problems before diagnosis. ADHD is a genetic disorder and is highly heritable, this is also important to think of when diagnosing ADHD (Tannock, 2013).
